After United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany and New Zealand, it was France doing its bit to tap the market for foreign education in India.
With their high quality education, the French universities have been able to target a good number of Indian aspirants. With a few campaigns in last three years, they have been able to increase the number of Indian students from 140 to 800.
It is actually EduFrance, an apex body of the French government to promote French education abroad, which acts as a bridge between French Universities and foreign students.
It further provides information on French education and facilitates admission procedure of international students.
EduFrance had recently organised a week of ''higher education desks'' from December 4 to 8, 2002 in the Country. After Mumbai and Chennai, the forum travelled to the Capital. At least 19 delegates from France, represented various higher institutions in diverse fields including management, engineering, medical sciences, computer sciences, telecommunications, hotel management, human and social sciences, fine arts, art and fashion, perfumery and architecture.
The Capital witnessed around 1000 students displaying a keen interest in French education, at the two-day fair. One of the visiting faculties from Reims Management School, France, said: "This time the crowd speaks of quality in itself. The students appear quite serious. They know what they want to achieve and are looking for better options abroad."
As France is considered to the Mecca of art and fashion, Alisha, a student of Jesus and Mary College, was found looking for a course in fashion designing. In her opinion, the objective of studying overseas is not merely acquiring better education but also imbibing a broader vision while learning. Major chunk of the students at the fair appeared drawn towards management, engineering and fashion courses.
What about the target of French universities in India? "Currently we have about 5,000 students from China, but the number from India is merely around 800. Our target for India is same as China. He hope to achieve it through lot of educational promotions, campaigns and forums", said Thierry Audric, counsellor for culture, science and technology, Embassy of France in India.
"Now, student visas are no hassle. They are monitored by education officers all over India", added Audric. As per many visiting delegates, France scores over European and American universities on the tuition fee factor. Total expenses in France comes about 1,050 Euros a month, which does not include the tuition fee.
A French degree offers international students a world of opportunities as it is recognised by industries and employers around the globe. Yet, getting a job permit to work in France is not easy. Students who study there normally establish their own links and manage jobs around the globe.
